Global Read Aloud 2014, Our First Digital Project

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Week 3
We just finished chapter 9 of Edward Tulane. The Cool Cats have now read about Edwards journey to
The Fisherman, Nellie and Edward.
the murky depths of the ocean, his very lonely time spent by himself at the bottom of the ocean, and his glorious rescue by a fisherman.

Edward has a new life now, but we imagined that he misses Abilene a great deal, and if he could, he would write a letter to her. So, The Cool Cats decided to create a digital postcard using ThingLink. We have been working on recognizing key details in a story using both the text and the pictures, so we practiced this skill in our letter writing, adding important details that we did not read about, but think may help someone visualize Edward's situation. We assumed that this way, no matter where in the world Abilene may be, she could stumble upon Edward's messages. Not only did The Cool Cats write letters as if they were Edward, but we did some searches together to find images and examples of things that Edward experienced throughout chapter 9 so that Abilene could understand and expereince some of what Edward has gone through.

  1. Hello Ms. Crosby's Class!
Wow! I love your digital postcard! I can't wait to share it with our class tomorrow. We just completed Chapter 7 and the fisherman has rescued Edward. Your digital postcard will be a great resource for us in Chapters 8 and 9.
Our class has been discussing the character of Edward. One of our vocabulary words last week was narcissist. Our students felt that Edward seemed to have a lot of those characteristics (especially in the first couple of chapters). We have been asking ourselves if we feel Edward's character will evolve to something differently by the end of his journey. What do you think?

  2. Dear Mrs. Miller,
Thank you for looking at our ThingLink, reading our postcard and giving us a compliment.

We predict that Edward will grow up and not be so selfish anymore. We think this because he has spent time away from Abilene and had to be alone on the ocean floor. He does not want that to happen again.

We look forward to hearing from your class soon.

  3. Dear Cool Cats,

We liked looking, hearing and reading your digital postcard. We have read to Chapter 12 and we think that you will be surprised at how much Edward changes, we were. We thought it was funny that you wrote that Nellie and Lawrence's house smelt of fish. I guess it would, except for when Nellie was baking and talking to Edward. Hope you are having fun reading the book still.

  4. Dear Mrs. Crosby's class,
We want to thank you for giving us a reason to learn how to use Thinglink. We loved the things you chose to highlight in your postcard, and couldn't wait to try it for ourselves. We are not quite finished yet, but we will post them on Kidblog as soon as we've finished them.

When we started we knew nothing about ThingLink, but by working in pairs we all figured it out. Now we can teach other kids how it works.

  5. Dear Cool Cats,

We really enjoyed reading your digital postcard. The music was entertaining and the recipe sounded delicious. However, our favorite part was reading the letters from Edward to Abilene. We hope Edward and Abilene are able to connect in the near future. We just started reading chapter 15 and are feeling sad that Edward once again feels lonely. We wonder how many different owners he will have and how many different names he will be called. Our goal in the near future is to create a digital postcard like you. Once we are done we will happily share it. Happy Halloween!

    Sincerely,
    Morgan's Might Monkeys
